History
The original buildin located where today Casa Garay is built is from the beginning of the City in the colonial times (17th century), and was a part of the Convenio de la Merced group of buildings. En the Archivos de Indias files it is said that the underground basement of this property was filled by tunnels that connected it with Catedral (cathedral) church.
In 1850, this property, such as other that belong to the church was expropriated by the State. Around 1880 a building is raised with the configuration we can see nowadays, and Mercedes Diaz de Garay is registered as the first owner. Mercedes Diaz de Garay, spouse to the famous painter Epifanio Garay y Caicedo, and it was later inherited by their son, the famous writer, music expert and diplomat, Don Narciso Garay Diaz, and the also famous poet and teacher, Msrs. Nicole Garay. |
